What started off as a cast-iron candle holder in the shape of a cow, became a collection that included dozens of fun iron-work pieces, before expanding to fabrics, paper products, and woven blankets. But who is behind these designs that incorporate traditional Scandinavian iconography in a modern context? It’s a love story at heart.

Bengt Lindberg and Lotta Glave were a couple already at university. As they were finishing their degrees, they both stepped out into the “real world” and got jobs -- Bengt at an ad agency and Lotta at one of Sweden’s big newspapers. Both jobs turned out to be pretty boring, and neither of them could stop the flow of creative ideas they had. Bengt started playing around with cast-iron and eventually came up with his first piece -- a cow candle holder. The cow was quickly joined by a sheep, a horse, and a moose. These four designs were almost immediately a hit, and Bengt worked hard to get them to the right retailers.

Lotta joined Bengt when he asked her to draw an angel that now adorns candleholders, Christmas tree decorations, jewelry, and and fabrics. The deal was sealed: now Lotta designs most of the pattern that turn into iron work, fabrics, woven items and decorations. Both grew up in households that appreciated the quirkiness of art, as well as valued the creative process.
Tapio was born in Hanko in 1915 and died in 1985 -- in his 70 years, he became a leading (possibly the leading) figure of modern Finnish industrial art.
Wirkkala’s wide ranging portfolio stretches from more traditional mediums like sculpture and glasswork to commercial graphics, city planning, furniture, postage stamps, and even banknotes designed for the Finnish treasury!
The beginning of his career was interrupted by the second world war, after which he worked in an advertising office. He entered many design competitions, and promptly won the Iittala glass design competition in 1946, launching his work into the public space. Wirkkala excelled when exploring the creative space that surrounded specific crafts: glassblowing, woodwork, engraving, and metalwork.
His work in glass, for example, pushed the boundaries of what was possible -- his designs required not just an understanding of form, but demanded glassblowers develop new methods to achieve the look required.
Wirkkala was happiest living and working in the remote woodlands of central Finland, or in the far north Lapplands. At one point in his career, production samples had to be brought to him by helicopter, so remote was his studio!
He took inspiration from nature, and natural forms he found in Finland’s wilderness: “Take a piece of ice in your hand and find our culture in it; find it in a stone smoothed by the rapids, or in sand that waves have shaped."
His rejection of the machine-made perfection achievable in post-war manufacturing shifted the entire design world towards more organic forms.

Up first are two new additions to the Essence line of glassware -- the Iittala Essence decanter in pale pink and moss green. The Iittala Essence decanter is part of a uncomplicated and contemporary glassware collection designed by Alfredo Häberli for Iittala. The idea behind the Essence line was to create a set that would allow for drinking a full range of fine wines with as few glasses as possible. Highly functional, each Iittala Essence glass has the same size base and stem, creating a beautifully harmonized aesthetic. The new arrivals bring a splash of color to the entire set.
Also expanding a beautiful set, the Ultima Thule range as designed by Tapio Wirkkala (watch for a designer profile on the blog next week!) receives new pieces, including a gorgeous plate that artfully showcases the elegant “melting ice” technique that the entire collection celebrates. There are other new forms, including a set of Cordial Glasses that are just perfect for postprandial digestifs after a satisfying autumn meal, and a new glass color: Rain.

The Nappula candleholder series was born when designer Matti Klenell visited the Nuutajärvi glass museum and fell in love with an unusually shaped table. Sturdy and sympathetic, Nappula represents a strong Nordic design language -- soft forms conform to the gentle flame of the candle, while the solid base and delicate stem create contrast between firm and subtle. Icons in the making, this expanded series deserves a place in your home!

And, of course, because we here at Fjorn have a soft spot for these birds, there are new additions to the Iittala Birds by Toikka line: the Reed Warbler and the Snow Finch.
What defines Danish modernism? Hans Wegner once told reporters that Danish modernism was “a continuous process of purification, and for me, of simplification, to cut down to the simplest possible elements.

Hans Wegner was a child of a shoe maker, born at the end of the Great War. He apprenticed first as a cabinet maker -- his feel for the wood and his joining techniques impressed, and his own designs soon saw light. After three years of working with wood, he headed to Copenhagen and studied to be an architect, eventually joining another Danish design deity: Arne Jacobsen. Together, with Erik Møller, they begin designing the Aarhus City Hall -- both inside and out. Working with Jacobsen, Hans Wegner began to simplify the chair to its most basic and functional pieces, never losing sight of balance and grace in the design.
Over the next 60 years (!!) Hans Wegner designed over a thousand pieces of furniture, and of those, more than 500 chairs. "A chair is to have no backside. It should be beautiful from all sides and angles.” he once said. Some of the most iconic chairs of the twentieth century, including the Wishbone Chair, the Wing Chair, and the Shell Chair are Wegner designs. The Wishbone chair has been in continuous production since it was introduced in 1949, and some of his former designs have been put into production after his death, such as the Oculus Chair.
Clothes last for at least a few seasons, sheets and towels in our closets last for years, blankets for decades; things that last years deserve some care in choosing. The best modern textiles blend artisanal craft methods with industrial processes than improve environmental sustainability and quality. While there are many examples of companies that do not hit that high bar, Ekelund Weavers from Sweden are a leader in the field.

Ekelund has a tradition as a weaving family that dates back to 1540 -- over 450 years! While still in feudal times, there might have been some smuggling and black market trading organized by the Ekelund clan, but their company has developed as the most ecologically sustainable weavers in the world. As a modern Swedish mill, they employ the most environmentally-friendly practices and source the best natural fibers, grown in an eco-friendly manner by farmers that are paid a fair and just wage for their work.

Ekelund also has a team of designers that continue to innovate and improve the artisanal weaving tradition they have inherited. From new weaving techniques that result in softer, more beautiful fabrics to modern designs that combine the best of Scandinavian design elements, the artistic talents of Ekelund weavers never lay quiet.

To admirers of Scandinavian aesthetics, Arne Jacobsen is one of the most recognizable designers in the field. Born in Denmark in 1902, his design career stretched from the late 1920s until his unexpected death in 1971. His creations have changed how we expect modern design to fit into our lives; chairs, clocks, desks, tableware and more: all functional, elegant, and long-lasting. Even if you don’t know his name, his Egg chair (designed for the SAS Royal Copenhagen hotel) or his lamps and light fixtures developed for manufacturer Louis Poulsen are instantly recognizable.

But much like our own Frank Lloyd Wright, Arne Jacobsen was an architect first. He designed buildings, and everything in them, including the furnishing, the fixtures, sometimes even the wall paper. Many of the works we are currently most familiar with were actually created to fill iconic projects he had constructed in Denmark. He famously had no design philosophy, but considered himself a student of International Modernism. “If I have a philosophy, it must be to sit at my drawing board.”

Before the second World War, Arne completed several large projects, including a seaside resort complex, a sea bath, the Århus City Hall building, and an office building in the historic center of Copenhagen that is now seen as a model for new construction in a historical setting. The war years were lean due to war-time material shortages and Nazi racial laws against Jewish citizens in Occupied Denmark. Jacobsen was forced to flee Denmark by rowing a boat to Sweden when plans for Jewish deportation to concentration camps were announced in 1943.

At the end of the war, Jacobsen’s style continued to develop, combining the use of multiple materials to create depth and interest in what could have been austere modernist structures. His SAS Royal Hotel, built from 1956 to 1960, gave birth to some of the most iconic furniture of the twentieth century, including the Swan and Egg chairs. He designed everything in the building, from the furniture to the fittings, even the ash trays in the lobby and the shuttle buses to the airport.

It is an irony that today Arne Jacobsen is known first as a designer -- it was a word that he disliked and never used. Rather, his interest in design extended to the entire universe he was creating. One of Jacobsen’s most important influences was Italian design historian Ernesto Rogers, who neatly summarized what could have been Jacobsen’s own mantra: every element in a design was equally important, “from the spoon to the city”.
From Iittala Tools comes a line of stainless steel cookware that combines good functional design with handsome looks. Björn Dahlström designed these pans with input from professional chefs, incorporating the best of kitchen functionality. Every pan has a triple layer base -- high-quality stainless steel alternates with three layers of aluminum. Stainless steel gives the pans the heat retention necessary for good searing and browning, while the aluminum layers conduct heat quickly and evenly, letting the entire surface of the pan provide an evenly heated surface for perfect results every time. The lids and bases stack well for easy storage, and the brushed stainless steel exterior always looks good.
A Finnish classic since it’s debut in 1960 (it’s even been featured on a postage stamp in Finland), this iconic Iittala Sarpaneva cast iron dutch oven has an integrated wooden handle that both allows the pot to be easily moved, but is also serves as the handle to remove the lit when hot. The cast iron construction heats evenly and retains heat to ensure a perfect braise. The interior of the pot is enamelled for easy cleaning and non-stick cooking. It is truly a joy to use, and a pleasure to look at.
Royal Copenhagen started as the only porcelain factory in Denmark, manufacturing fine china products for the Danish monarchy (and the royal families across Europe). The quality of their products grew, as did their reputation across Europe for hand painted, finely crafted china. Every year since 1908, Royal Copenhagen has created a Christmas plate featuring an annual design -- the original plate has now been joined by a cup and saucer set, a “drop” (think Christmas tree ornament) and a porcelain bell. These hand painted pieces are now collector’s items and cherished family favorites around the world.

Bing & Grøndahl started making annual Christmas plates even before Royal Copenhagen -- in 1895. Now owned by the same company, Bing & Grøndahl also produces exquisite china, and their annual plates, cups, and ornaments are no exception. The hand painted designs are beautiful. This year's plate features a fox in a still and snow meadow, and is sure to become a family favorite.
The current debate over plastics in the environment might give one pause in thinking about purchasing more plastic. Plastic disposal is a big environmental problem. The bigger discussion shouldn’t be just about plastic: it must be about product lifecycle design. The lifecycle of any item that is manufactured for single use has different concerns than a product that is used for decades (or longer). A plastic sack that carries a few groceries can take hundreds of years to decompose -- this clearly is a poor material choice for a disposable item that could be replaced with reusable or more readily compostable materials!

Pappelina uses only ethically-produced, environmentally-responsible materials. At the most basic, rugs are made by weaving lengthwise fibers (warp) around widthwise fibers (weft). Normally, the weft provides the color, pattern, and texture of the rug -- Pappelina uses the same process (see more here below in a very cool video!) Pappelina weave fibers are produced from pure polyester, manufactured in Germany. The weft is produced from pure PVC ribbons, made in Sweden from virgin materials. Both PVC and polyester are endlessly recyclable -- meaning that excellent quality new fibres can be produced from old materials -- something of which not all plastic materials are capable.

The best way to recycle is to never have to recycle; building products that last a lifetime means that the energy and materials that are consumed never need to be consumed again. With some simple care (like washing and air drying), Pappelina rugs can last a lifetime. When that lifetime is finished, they can be directly turned into new products.

Award-winning Pappelina designs are manufactured to last and will remain a stylish addition to your home for decades. Right now, during the Fjorn Hello Midsummer sale, you can get your favorite designs on sale, with free shipping. Come see them yourself at our beautiful shop in Carmel-by-the-Sea, or online at fjorn.com
The brushes are beautifully made: wooden handles, natural fiber bristles, all assembled with great care. Does it seem crazy to spend as much as a bottle of wine on a dish brush? It won’t once you start using it. The wooden handle and stiff (but not-too-stiff) horsehair bristles on the Long Handle Dish Brush make for easy cleaning of last night's leftovers or a bowl sticky with bread dough.
The Pan Scrubber has thick, stiff fibres drawn into an easy to hold wooden handle that removes baked-on residue from pans with ease, while the soft bristles of the Table Brush make removing crumbs from the table cloth or flour from the counter top a joy. Their sturdy Bench Scraper and delicate bristle Pastry Brush make handy kitchen partners to any baker.
In addition to kitchen supplies, Iris Hantverk has a whole collection of brooms, brushes, and dustpans. All of their wet brushes will last for at least a year with a bit of care (all you have to do is lay them bristle down to dry when done with use) and their dry brushes and brooms will last a lifetime.
At the time when the days are at their longest and the nights the shortest, all of Scandinavia rolls out to celebrate Midsommar. A festival that marks the beginning of summer holidays, Midsommar has its roots in a celebration of the summer equinox. The sun is warm, winter is a far away memory, and the wildflowers are in bloom. From the Atlantic fjords of Norway all the way across to the Baltic beaches in Finland, huge pyres are built for a midnight bonfire. In villages and town squares across Sweden, people gather in the morning to drink coffee, collect wildflowers and erect the maypole. Biscuits are baked and potatoes scrubbed for the afternoon meal, and everyone gets ready for an evening of beer and schnapps and music. In some places, folklore has it that young women collect seven different kinds of wildflowers to hide under their pillows so that they will dream of their future husbands.

It’s an evening meant to be enjoyed with friends and family, enjoying the summer warmth (but don’t forget your wollens: it’s still Scandinavia) and the camaraderie built around fire and food. On the typical smörgåsbord is pickled herring (often served with rye bread, salted butter, and creme fraiche), cheeses, roasted salmon, boiled new potatoes with dill, and maybe some elk or venison if you have a hunter in the family. The efterrätt (dessert) is fresh strawberries, having just come into season around the time of Midsommar, eaten by themselves or heaped onto a sponge cake and lashed with heavy cream.

After dinner is a time for music and dancing, be it traditional folk music around a maypole, ballroom dancing on a stage by a lake, or friends around a campfire with a guitar. In every Scandinavian country there are drinking songs (the racier the better!) that are sung as the bottle of akvavit or schnapps is passed around. As the hour grows late (but the sky stays light, or depending on how far north you are, it remains daytime), one thing you will notice is your fellow revellers are not too interested in sleep. As one Norwegian friend noted: “Sleep? That’s what you do in winter.”
The sleek regional train pulled out into the bright summer morning, the green suburbs of northern Stockholm quickly giving way to woodlands. After changing to a smaller train, and then yet a smaller train (with a few cups of strong Swedish coffee to keep us going), we arrived in the province of Dalarna.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pappelina has been making rugs here since shortly after Lina Rickardsson returned from studies in the US. Lina set out to create modern rugs with stylish designs that still incorporated traditional weaving techniques.
As she developed her different styles of rugs, she stumbled upon something special -- using high-quality plastic ribbons, woven on traditional looms, she developed beautiful, durable, weatherproof rugs.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As Pappelina expanded, they stayed true to Lina's original vision of a quality brand, manufactured in Sweden. All of the materials are sourced from the EU, and Pappelina ensures that everything they use is sustainably sourced. Pappelina rugs are manufactured in a family-owned mill in central Sweden, helping to keep this traditionally important craft alive in Dalarna.
The result is delightful! We were given a tour of the weaving floor, and got to see the looms in action (now with computer assist, even for these old wooden looms!).
Pappelina has been traditionally weaving non-traditional materials since 1999, always with an eye to create rugs that are simple, stylish, and functional. Lina Rickardsson returned from studying in the USA in 1999 and turned her lifelong interest in weaving into a business. She started weaving linen rugs on a classic loom in her hometown. In a bit of serendipity, Lina found some plastic ribbons that had been used decades before in an attempt to weave a plastic rug. She took these ribbons and wove them using the same traditional method she used for her linen creations, and a new product was born.
Lina’s original design has expanded to several styles of rugs, all woven in Sweden on traditional looms, with ecologically-produced materials sourced from Sweden and Germany. Pappelina has continued to focus on simple, stylish, and functional rugs, in addition to adding other woven items to their offerings. Pappelina plastic rugs are perfect for indoor or outdoor use: durable, waterproof (but still allowing for water to pass through them), and easily washable. The designs and colors are fresh and current, letting your poolside, patio and porch pop.
What we love most about Scandinavian design is that it is not all about looks; these are items that are meant to be used and admired every day. So we weren’t surprised when we learned that the Swedes had discovered a more stylish and serviceable way to do dishes!

No one likes sponges. That’s just a fact. They’re boring and smelly, they need to be replaced regularly, and aren’t environmentally friendly. Enter the dry sponge, more commonly called the Swedish dishcloth, to differentiate it from all of the regular fabric kitchen dishcloths out there. They were invented in 1949 by engineer Curt Lindquist, who discovered that a mix of cellulose (made from wood fiber) and cotton could absorb about 15 times its own weight.

Swedish dishcloths make a great ecological substitute for the tired old plastic sponge. They are 7 x 8 inches (17 x 20 cm), and get soft when wet. They are comparable to a super-thick paper towel, more like cloth than sponge. Swedish dishcloths can be used in place of sponges and paper towels, and can be rinsed and re-used, or put in the dishwasher or washing machine for a more thorough cleaning. They’re made from all natural materials and last for up to a year—that’s a lot of sponges and paper towels you won’t need to buy!

Swedish dishcloths have been popular in Scandinavia for years, but are only finally becoming known in the United States. FJORN carries Swedish dishcloths from Klippan, Viskaform by Ekelund Weavers, and Pappelina, all with bright, bold Scandinavian patterns that will liven up your kitchen cleanup.

We’ve even got an entire collection of festive Swedish dishcloths for the holidays! These bright kitchen accessories make a great stocking stuffer.
I have had the misfortune of being a poor sleeper my entire life. I find it difficult to fall asleep and difficult to stay asleep. My other siblings slept like logs every night. An hour or so after bedtime, I’d wander out to the kitchen where Grandma Astrid spent most of her time. She didn’t seem to sleep much. Not one for too many words, she’d pull a chair over to the counter and I’d knead bread dough with her in silence, or make pancake batter, or pit cherries, or whatever project she had going.

After I had started yawning again, she’d make hot milk with honey. She’d turn the gas burner on and melt a bit of butter into the cast iron pancake pan that she had. It had seven rings to make seven thin crepe-like pancakes. The batter would hiss very quietly as she spooned a bit of batter into each ring and then deftly swirled the pan to coat the bottom of each ring. As the pancakes cooked she’d flip each one with her thumb, somehow not burning herself. She’d place them on my special plate that had a picture of Gonzo the muppet on it and squeeze lemon and sprinkle sugar on them.

I’d crawl back into bed with butter still on my fingers.

Swedish Pancakes

4 tablespoons butter, melted
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 ¾ cup whole milk
3 eggs
pinch of salt
optional: zest of one orange or lemon, pinch of cinnamon, or a ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

Whisk the eggs and flour together until smooth. Add the melted butter and milk slowly while whisking to form a smooth batter. Add the pinch of salt and any optional ingredients. Let batter rest 30 minutes (can be kept in the refrigerator overnight if you wish to prepare it the night before).

Heat Swedish pancake griddle over medium-high heat with a bit of butter in each ring. Add a tablespoon of batter to each ring and swirl pan to evenly distribute. Flip pancakes after about 2 minutes, when they have started to brown a bit. Cook on the second side for a minute or so.

Serve with sugar and lemon, or with lingonberry jam!

It’s not a secret that we love Christmas around here at Fjorn. The patient rituals of preparation and anticipation just feel so right as Winter comes. One of our favorite traditions is unwrapping the “special” box of ornaments for the Christmas tree. We’ve got regular decorations for the tree, too -- mirrored balls and candy canes and popcorn garlands -- but the real stars are the special ornaments.

Some were made by our kids and nieces and nephews -- often strange blobs of modelling clay painted bright colors, or macaroni-errata that is loved because we love the person who glued it together. These are hung first.

Following is the jumble that has been collected in twenty-five years of decorating our own Christmas tree -- ornaments bought at Christmas markets in snowy lands, the ones given to us as gifts by grandparents and friends, memorial ornaments, the truly odd Star Wars ornament given to us by a hardcore fan babysitter.

Some we bought for ourselves because we liked the look of pressed tin ornaments one year. Others because they were simply the ugliest things we could find at the souvenir shop. Then there are the ornaments that we love because they are beautiful, or whimsical, or just fun. Together, they are probably not going to make the cut for a professional photo shoot of the perfect Christmas tree, but for us they tell a story of Christmas spent together remembering where we came from.

Check out some of our favorite ornaments at Fjorn Scandinavian -- we guarantee that you’ll find something to compliment that macaroni-monster or commemorative Lillehammer 1994 figurine.

As you fly from North America to Copenhagen, a few hours out of Chicago it’s already the wee hours of the morning. The flight passes close to the southern tip of Iceland. In early December, it’s not uncommon to look towards the arctic and see the Northern Lights, shimmering veils of soft blue and green hues seemingly suspended from nothing.
After another hour or so, the lights in the cabin will come on, and breakfast will be served, and we will start busy preparation for our arrival. These few minutes, between busy periods of preparation and action, are beautiful stolen moments, and some of my favorites. I’ve stayed awake every time I make the December journey, ever since my Grandma Astrid showed me the Northern Lights on our first trip back to Scandinavia.
As Thanksgiving rolls to Christmas, one of the best traditions of the season is often overlooked: Advent. Advent counts the four Sundays in preparation for Christmas. In Scandinavian homes, four candles are laid out on the table, and one more is lit every Sunday. As the weeks progress, anticipation of the coming holiday builds. I can remember as a child waiting all afternoon as the sky darkened, until at dinner we could light the candles and open another door on the advent calendar. These are stolen moments, too: a few peaceful minutes of contemplations and gratitude in the midst of the busy end of the year.
I use proper kitchen towels, just like my grandma. Beautiful, woven, Swedish kitchen towels. A paper roll of towels is fine when you need to drain some bacon. For real life, you need a proper towel -- to dry dishes, to use as a hot pad to pull the artisanal (or frozen) pizza from the oven, to wipe down the counters, and wipe up your own kid’s spills.
